Sadie, You Make Me Better

Growing up, I always knew I had a desire to make the world a more inclusive place. That led me to pursue a degree in special education. Even before I was a mom, I always knew that I wanted to adopt or foster, and if ever given the chance, I wanted to be able to provide a loving and supportive home for a child with a disability. I felt that I could make a difference. In my own self-doubt, I never thought I would actually take the necessary steps to do it.

Fast forward to finding out my second-born child was diagnosed with Down syndrome. As shocking as the news was, her diagnosis allowed me to feel that this is exactly where my life was meant to be and that God knew how much we needed each other. Over a year later, our girl shows me every day how much better she makes my life. She has opened up so many doors to relationships, has empowered me to make the world more accepting of people with an extra 21st chromosome, and has shown me what it means to be strong with all of the hardships she endured with a smile this first year of life. Sadie, you are a precious gift from God, and you make me so much better.
