Scout, You Make Me Better
Scout, you are the cherry on top of our family, and you were always meant to be ours. Long before we were married or had any children, when we were still kids ourselves, God was quietly preparing our hearts for you.
Throughout college and the early years of our marriage, we felt our hearts continually drawn toward people with special differences. I even earned a degree in special education, one I never ended up using. For years, I wondered what the purpose of that was, but all along, it was you.
When we first learned that you would be born with Down syndrome, I’ll admit I felt a little worried. I wondered how this might change our lives.
Now that you’re here, our lives have changed, but maybe we were always meant to change in this way. Your sisters adore you, and watching them love you so fiercely is one of the greatest gifts.
Scout, you make us better.
