Every Mile Matters
I used to think running was mostly about finishing.
Crossing the finish line.
Setting a new personal record.
Checking another race off the calendar.
But somewhere along the way, running became about something much bigger.
It became about perspective.
Some miles feel easy, and there are miles where every step feels harder than the last. There are hills you didn’t expect and moments when you wonder if you have anything left.
Parenting a child with Down syndrome has felt a lot like that.
Not because Jack is hard.
Because the world often is.
When Jack was born, I wasn’t handed a roadmap. I was handed fear. Fear that came from a diagnosis conversation that focused on limitations instead of possibilities. Fear of the unknown. Fear of whether I was enough.
But step by step, mile by mile, that fear was replaced with something stronger.
Hope.
Running has reminded me that growth rarely happens all at once. It happens one step at a time. One choice at a time. One mile at a time.
The same has been true in our family.
I’ve watched Jack do things people once questioned.
I’ve watched him work harder than most people ever see.
I’ve watched him celebrate every finish line, big or small, with the kind of joy that reminds me why we keep going.
And honestly, he’s the one who keeps teaching me.
He reminds me to slow down.
To celebrate progress instead of perfection.
To find joy in the middle of the journey instead of waiting until the finish.
That’s what Jack’s Basket has been doing for families for more than a decade.
Every basket delivered.
Every family encouraged.
Every medical provider equipped.
Every volunteer who gives their time.
Every donor who says yes.
It’s another step toward changing the story a family hears on diagnosis day.
I’d love to invite you to take your own steps with us and join our Jogging for Jack’s Basket team.
Maybe you’re already training for a 5K.
Maybe you’ve been thinking about your first half marathon.
Maybe you’re ready to challenge your body and mind by signing up for that marathon on your bucket list.
Whatever your race looks like, consider making it count for something even bigger.
Run for hope.
Run for families.
Run so another parent hears “Congratulations” instead of “I’m sorry.”
Run because every baby deserves to be celebrated.
When you choose to Jog for Jack’s Basket, your miles become someone else’s hope.
Every finish line helps us reach another family with encouragement, resources, and connection during one of the most important moments of their lives.
The truth is, this was never just about running.
It’s about choosing purpose.
It’s about showing up.
It’s about believing that ordinary people, taking one step after another, can change the world!
So lace up your shoes.
Find a race in your community.
Invite a friend.
Bring your family.
And let’s run together so every baby with Down syndrome is welcomed with hope.
Because every mile matters.
Find a race. Start of Fundraiser. Jog for Jack’s Basket.
