Samuel, You Make Me Better
Before Samuel’s arrival, we already had three children, and adding a fourth seemed like a simple addition. However, we discovered Samuel’s diagnosis almost halfway through our pregnancy. During a routine anatomy scan, we learned the gender and thought everything was going well. It wasn’t until my doctor’s office called to schedule an appointment to discuss my scan that we were informed that Samuel wasn’t measuring as expected and had certain defining features of a baby with Down syndrome. In that moment, it was overwhelming to process the possibility of a life-threatening condition or Trisomy 21. We decided to undergo all the necessary testing to determine the exact diagnosis.
After weeks of extensive research, late-night studies, and grieving the child we had imagined, we received our results. We were relieved to learn that Samuel didn’t have a life-threatening condition, but we were still processing the fact that he had Down syndrome. Throughout the pregnancy, we continued to consult specialists and discovered that Samuel had notable abnormalities in his brain, heart, and kidneys. We were informed that he would likely require a NICU stay when born.
As we approached his due date, we felt a sense of peace and acceptance. We had access to numerous resources and support from many people, which we are incredibly grateful for. Upon Samuel’s birth, we felt an immediate sense of his destined place in the world. We initially spent 11 days in the NICU, and after returning home, we spent another 9 days there. Despite the challenging medical journey we’ve endured, he has been cleared of all the prenatally detected issues. Currently, he requires supplemental oxygen and a feeding tube. He has endured significant medical challenges but remains the most joyful and content baby we’ve ever known.
His infectious smile and laughter bring immense happiness to our family, and his siblings adore him beyond words. Samuel has brought an unparalleled sense of joy and fulfillment into our lives, regardless of the obstacles he’s faced. We eagerly anticipate continuing this journey with him and witnessing his remarkable progress in this world. I am certain that all the tears, sleepless nights, and worries were worth it. Samuel was precisely what our family needed, and we wouldn’t change a single moment of our journey with him.
