A Letter From Dad: Michael

Dear Remi,

You have completely changed how I view fatherhood. I enjoy every little milestone with you. When we first received our Jack’s Basket, the couple who delivered it told us that we would get to enjoy each stage of life longer. That has always stuck with me, and it always will. It is one of the greatest blessings I get from being your dad.

Receiving that basket when you were born helped me better understand what Down syndrome is and made me feel like I was not alone in this journey. Since then, you have taught me more about life and how to be a better person and dad than anyone else I have ever met.

You make me realize what is actually important in life. You have taught me patience and not to worry about the small things. I find more joy in each day we get to spend together, and I have so much less stress in my life because of you. You have changed how I live my life. You have made me a better person and a much happier person. You bring more joy and happiness to the world than anyone else I know.

One of my proudest moments as your dad was when you first learned how to clap your hands together. You worked so hard, trying again and again until you finally got it. You were so proud of yourself. Watching you accomplish something you had worked so hard on made me feel like the proudest father in the world. You never gave up.

One of my favorite memories with you was at the zoo when you were about four years old. We were in the aquarium looking at all the fish when a shark swam by. You thought it was the coolest thing ever, and when it swam away, you started saying, “Are you?” meaning “Where are you?” We both looked at each other and laughed so hard. Every time we went back to the zoo that summer and saw the sharks, you would say it again, and we would laugh together all over again. It is a memory I will always cherish. Moments like that always make me smile and remind me how much you truly make this world a better place.

I want you to always know that you have changed my life for the better. Raising you is the most rewarding thing I could ever imagine. There are hard times sometimes, but through all of it, you make me smile and laugh every single day. The world needs more people with Down syndrome because you spread joy and happiness everywhere you go.

I love you more than words can say, and I will always be proud to be your dad.

Love,
Dad

Michael’s daughter, Remi, received a basket in 2019. Now, Michael volunteers at the Jack’s Basket office and has been a huge help as we work to expand our headquarters location! From hanging our gallery wall to building furniture, we are so grateful for his hardworking spirit and dedication to our mission!
